The International Orthopaedic Diversity Alliance is an international collaboration with a vision to unite leaders in orthopaedic surgery and industry to promote diversity, equity and inclusion. The primary role of IODA is to provide a global forum to identify, develop, share, support, engage with and advance diversity in all facets of orthopaedic surgery. Membership is free and open to all in the healthcare sector.
The International Orthopaedic Diversity Alliance (IODA) was established in late 2019 by Jennifer Green, the then Australian Orthopaedic Association (AOA) Orthopaedic Women’s Link (OWL) Chair. IODA was born of the inspiring efforts of Malaysian Orthopaedic Association (MOA) President “Vivian” PC Chye, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) President Kristy Weber, and AAOS Diversity Advisory Board Chair Anthony “AJ” Johnson, to advance the inclusion of women and under-represented minorities in orthopaedic surgery.
IODA’s founding members had all previously engaged in activities to advance diversity and inclusion in orthopaedic surgery in their respective countries, hence the concept of creating an alliance of orthopaedic surgeons, to collaborate across national and continental boundaries for the same goal, was a natural progression.
It was made evident through the founding members’ experiences that a global diversity advocacy group should not only advocate for women but for all under-represented groups in orthopaedics. Markedly, research in this area also strongly supports that diversity and inclusion in healthcare is a vital strategy in eradicating healthcare inequalities.
Today the IODA Board is formed of 12 members, representing Africa, the Asia-Pacific, Europe, the Middle East, North America and Latin America. The Board is supported by five Committees that progress IODA’s core activities, including developing and contributing to the IODA library, newsletter, social media, webinar and website activities.
The IODA membership is a vast network extending across six continents and dozens of nations. IODA recognises that its members are an integral part to progressing positive change for the profession. As such, members are provided access to the latest research and resources, access to communicate with any IODA member across the globe, and provided the option to promote their events via IODA and participate in collaborative research activities.
