I have been a full-fledged diplomate and fellow of Orthopaedic Surgery for 15 years, and have practiced in both the government and private settings. I have also taught the basics of Orthopaedic Surgery in the College of Medicine of a state university, Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, for about a decade now. Recently, I have also engaged in hospital management and administration and have held management positions in several institutions in the Rizal Province. Overall, I believe I have represented the Filipino women Orthopaedic Surgeons the best I could and have brought pride to my profession and my institutions.

Hello, everyone. I’m Yumi. I was born and raised in Hiroshima, and now I live in Tokyo with my husband and our two elementary school-aged boys. I’m an orthopedic surgeon and the head of a department at a regional core hospital. My subspecialty is hand surgery. I also train four senior residents to become orthopedic specialists, alongside another board-certified doctor. It is hard to teach the basics to new doctors each year. However, in this rapidly progressing field, I enjoy learning something new every year to better guide them.
There are few female orthopedic surgeons in Japan, and through my work with the Japanese Orthopaedic Association’s gender equality committee, I’ve come to feel a greater responsibility as a role model. I want to be someone who can pay it forward to others.
My hobbies are going to the beach in summer and skiing in winter with my family. It’s nice to meet you.
