Medical Career and Innovations

Dr. McDowell serves at the St. Ann’s Bay Regional Hospital in Jamaica, where he has pioneered regenerative surgical procedures. Notably, he introduced stem cell therapies and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatments to the region, aiming to promote tissue regeneration and delay the need for joint replacements. These procedures have benefited patients with conditions such as arthritis, nerve injuries, and ligament damage . He has innovations/developed/invented surgical equipment 

Role in the 2010 Haiti Earthquake Response

Following the devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck Haiti on January 12, 2010, Dr. McDowell was among the first medical responders. As part of a joint initiative by the Jamaican Ministry of Health and the Jamaica Medical Doctors Association under a CARICOM-led humanitarian mission, he and his team established two critical hospital sites: one for life-saving surgeries and another for limb reconstructions. They also set up walk-in clinics for the wounded and mobile medical units known as the “Train of Hope” to reach patients in remote areas. Within the first 48 hours, the team performed 43 operations (26 major and 17 minor). Over the course of eight days, they treated approximately 1,229 to 1,249 patients and conducted 106 surgeries, including 21 life-saving amputations .

De. McDowell has authored and co-authored several scholarly articles in the West Indian Medical Journal, covering topics such as hip fractures, carpal tunnel syndrome, and orthopaedic trauma management. He is also a founding member of the Caribbean Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons, reflecting his commitment to advancing orthopaedic care in the region . Sports Medicine
Dr. Derrick McDowell is a prominent Jamaican orthopaedic surgeon and sports and exercise medicine physician, with a specialized focus on football (soccer) medicine in Jamaica. He studied at the University of Wales ( in Cardiff) where he attained a Post Graduate Diploma in Sports and Exercise Medicine. His work in this area includes both clinical and administrative roles that have had a national impact.
