Orthopaedic Diversity

About

I am an orthopaedic oncologist in Philadelphia. I grew up in the midwest (St. Louis) and enjoy camping, backpacking, canoeing, skiing and being outdoors. I have 2 nieces. I enjoy travelling around the world. I have held 3 different jobs in different academic centers and learned from each opportunity. I love taking care of kids and adults with bone and soft tissue tumors. My non-work passions are environmental/climate issues and women's rights issues.

What made you join IODA?

I didn't know enough about issues around diversity and inclusion around the globe and wanted to better understand how we could learn from each other. Also, i recognized Jenny Green as a dynamic leader which made me want to help build this organization.

How have you approached DEI in your workplace?

I try to mentor and sponsor women and those underrepresented in medicine and to treat everyone with curiosity and respect. I try and acknowledge by biases and question my assumptions. I try to remove structural barriers to inclusion.

How do you define inclusion?

When people in a particular group or practice feel as though their unique story is valued and they are included in all aspects of a discussion or decision-making.

What is your proudest achievement?

I've been proud to increase the gender diversity in our residency training program to 38% (>2x national average).
