I am an orthopedic surgeon specializing in operative and non-operative treatment of foot and ankle conditions from young adolescent to adult patients. My expertise includes minimally invasive techniques, arthroscopy, deformity correction, complex fracture care and total ankle arthroplasty. I grew up in Englewood, NJ, and earned my undergraduate degree at Yale College. I then completed my medical degree at University of Pittsburgh where I was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) and the Gold Humanism Honor Society. I remained in Pittsburgh to complete residency at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. While there, I served in numerous education and leadership roles, including administrative chief resident. I then completed orthopedic subspecialty fellowship training in foot and ankle at Harvard/Brigham and Women’s Hospital and in Boston, Massachusetts. In addition to my clinical practice, I am active in academic research, publishing articles, abstracts, and book chapters on foot and ankle trauma, sports injuries, patient reported outcomes and sustainability in medicine. I am passionate about serving the diverse patient population of Philadelphia and beyond.
What made you join IODA?
I joined IODA after participating in webinars and following the active social media presence. I was impressed by how many points of view were reflected within chosen panelists and literature circulated by the group.
How have you approached DEI in your workplace?
I have used both my learned and lived experiences as a trainee and early attending to help frame discussions regarding improving diversity and inclusion of each level in orthopaedics. As someone who is early in my career, I have the unique set of recent experiences to help correct current culture. I have worked towards ensuring recruitment and retention of a diverse resident cohort by critically examining our current practices and have started implementing skills garnered from IODA webinars in my professional settings.
How do you define inclusion?
Inclusion means allowing everyone equal access to opportunity, resources and emotional investment. As a woman, a woman of color, a black person, a child of immigrants, I have seen how difficult it may be to embark on a career without much context. An inclusive environment highlights the value of different perspectives of people with similar goals.
What is your proudest achievement?
Winning the RJOS Courage award for "speaking up against discrimination and working to create a more inclusive environment in orthopaedics"
